A Guide for Mother's Day

Mother’s Day! The Lord has blessed all of us mothers. Some of us may be mothers to biological kids, adopted kids, church kids, neighborhood kids, or even animal kids. Regardless of how you may be a mother, you are just that – a mother. For some, Mother’s Day may be a sad day. If your mother has already gone to be with Jesus, don’t bog yourself down with the loneliness of not having her here, but fill your day with the joyous memories that you still cherish.

This is the only day of the year set aside to specifically recognize these lovely ladies in our lives, and I have some helpful ideas to assist you with what a mother may like for this special day. Listed are ideas for mothers with little ones, big ones, and ideas for the hubby to do for his sweet wife.

A picture/craft made by you/kids: For moms with little ones – Mothers love their kids’ feet and hands. You can slap some paint on those puppies, press it on a canvas or construction paper, date it, put the kids name and age and voila! That is more precious than gold. Maybe even frame it so that she can hang it in the kitchen or display it in the living room.

A handwritten card/note: Get your shovels guys! It’s time to dig out all of those suppressed feelings you all hide so well. Write and tell your wonderful mom/wife why you love her, how much you admire her, how well she cooks, and her incredible ability to always save the day with shoes and socks go missing. A great Bible verse to use would be Proverbs 31:28.

A night/day off: Send her out with the girls! This is a great opportunity to work with some fellow husband friends and arrange a ‘Girl’s Night’ for your wife and her friends. She desperately needs this. I recently got a Saturday afternoon to myself. It was amazing!

A parents night/day out: This is the most precious to me. Our children are little so there is little to no time for just my husband and me. I absolutely adore doing things with my husband. He is my arm candy when we go out, my pillow when we lounge on the couch, the best chef when he’s trying to impress me, and the best friend I want with me when we are cheering on our favorite football teams. Plan something special just for the two of you. Call the in-laws and schedule for them to keep the kids all night. For one whole night, give her your undivided attention. No social media! Leave your cares at the door and love each other.

A day alone with Mom: This is a great idea for moms that have older children that are in college or that have left the nest. Take your mom to lunch, a movie, or shopping. Just enjoy time doing what you and she love to do. No social media! Let this day be about each other.

Overnight getaway: This would be great for moms who don’t have children of their own or for couples that no longer have a mother in their lives. A trip to escape the stresses and worries of the world would be appreciated by anyone. It doesn’t have to be an extravagant trip, maybe camping or an overnight in a town a couple hours away. Do what fits your budget.

My prayer for all of you this coming Mother’s Day is that you rejoice in the Lord for all that He has blessed you with. Whether you have been blessed with children, a loving mother, or a spouse that praises you, be assured that you are blessed beyond measure.

Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.’ Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates (Proverbs 31:25-31).
